College Prep for Parents and Teens

College Prep for Parents and Teens

The college years are a time of immense growth for your teen, and as the launch date approaches, emotions can run high – excitement for them, a touch of sadness for you.

But amidst the whirlwind, there's preparation to be done!

Here's a guide to help parents navigate the pre-college phase and ensure a smooth transition for both you and your teen:

  • Logistics and Paperwork (Don't Procrastinate!):
    • Financial Aid and Scholarships:
      • Double-check all financial aid documents are submitted and understood. Explore scholarship opportunities that may arise after initial awards have been granted.
    • Housing:
      • Review housing assignments, finalize roommate agreements if applicable, and explore campus maps to familiarize yourself with their new environment.
    • Health Insurance:
      • Ensure your teen has proper health insurance coverage and understand any campus health center policies.
    • Immunizations and Medical Records:
      • Verify if any immunizations are required by the college and update their medical records with the campus health center.
  • Practical Matters for Independence:
    • Life Skills 101:
      • Review basic housekeeping skills like laundry, budgeting, and meal planning. Encourage them to practice some of these tasks beforehand.
    • Digital Literacy and Safety:
      • Discuss responsible online behavior, cyber security measures, and the importance of data privacy.
    • Packing Essentials:
      • Work with your teen to create a packing list that includes everything from clothes and bedding to toiletries and electronics.
    • Campus Resources:
      • Familiarize them with the location and function of key campus resources like libraries, computer labs, and student support services.
  • Open Communication and Emotional Support:
    • Honest Conversations:
      • Talk openly about their expectations, anxieties, and concerns. Encourage them to communicate openly with you and their professors.
    • Setting Boundaries and Expectations:
      • Discuss healthy lifestyle choices, responsible behavior, and academic expectations.
    • Building Independence:
      • While offering support, encourage them to take responsibility for their actions, decisions, and well-being.
  • Preparing Yourself for the Empty Nest:
    • Self-Care Strategies:
      • Acknowledge your own emotions and develop healthy coping mechanisms for when your teen leaves.
    • Maintain Connection:
      • Discuss communication preferences and establish healthy boundaries for staying connected
    • Nurturing Your Relationships:
      • Invest in your own hobbies, interests, and social circles to maintain a sense of fulfillment.

Remember!

This is a time of growth for both you and your teen. Embrace the journey and celebrate their independence!

The transition to college is a collaborative effort. Involve your teen in the planning process as much as possible.
