Embracing Your Teen's College Journey: A Guide for Supportive Parents

As our teens prepare to spread their wings and embark on the next chapter of their lives, it's natural for us to feel a mix of emotions—pride, excitement, and perhaps a tinge of sadness at the thought of them leaving the nest. Amidst all these emotions, it's crucial for us to remember to avoid dismissing our teen's college experiences.

Our teens are about to embark on a journey filled with new challenges, opportunities, and experiences that will shape them into the individuals they are meant to become. As parents, it's our role to support and encourage them every step of the way, even when it means letting go and allowing them to forge their own path.

So, I think to myself …

how can I avoid dismissing my middle daughter, Ivonna’s, college experiences and instead embrace and celebrate this exciting chapter in her life?

We can......

1. Listen with an Open Heart:

One of the most important things we can do as parents is to listen to our teens with an open heart and mind.

  • Let them share their hopes, dreams, and concerns about college without judgment or criticism.
  • Show genuine interest in their experiences and validate their feelings, even if they differ from our own.

2. Empower Them to Make Decisions:

College is a time for our teens to explore their interests, discover their passions, and make their own decisions.

Instead of imposing our own expectations or opinions onto them, empower them to take ownership of their college experience and make choices that align with their values and goals.

    3. Celebrate Their Achievements:

Whether it's acing a test, landing an internship, or making new friends, take the time to celebrate your teen's achievements, no matter how big or small. Let them know how proud you are of their accomplishments and encourage them to keep striving for success.

      4. Offer Support and Guidance:

While it's important to give our teens the freedom to navigate their college experiences independently, they still need our support and guidance along the way.

      • Be there to offer a listening ear
      • Provide advice when needed
      • Help them navigate any challenges or obstacles they may encounter.

        5. Stay Connected:

Even as our teens venture off to college, it's important to stay connected and maintain a strong bond with them. Schedule regular check-ins, whether it's through phone calls, video chats, or visits home. Let them know that you're always here for them, no matter where life takes them.

By avoiding dismissing our teen's college experiences and instead embracing and celebrating this exciting journey, we can show our unwavering support and love as they spread their wings and soar into the future.

            We can DO this, Parents!
